Rule 11 — Purpose: Pleasure or Achievement
G.R. Taylor's Rules of Matrism/Patrism Explained

Patrists pursue Achievement
A dutiful man will suppress his own desires to pursue those aims described by duty, such as being a soldier or clerk, father or son, husband or friend. Hence, he wins not only purpose but identity, so can direct his energies into sensible achievements for the community.

Matrists pursue Pleasure
The self-indulgent are dominated by their personal desires, which limits their duty to a facade: the minimum public effort required to avoid penalty. This bestows no identity except as a hypocrite who secretly weakens the community.
