10 See Part Three of this book, the chapter 'German Wife and Mother'. How far this conviction of the interdependence of racial and character values went is shown in an episode from The Kersten Memoirs. By chance Himmler had got to know a tall, blond young man, and without checking upon him further, and purely on the basis of his well-known racial assumptions, had him transferred to Hitler's bodyguard. As he soon learnt, this man was a criminal with several previous convictions, and Himmler was 'dumbfounded. He would never have believed such a thing of a blond man.'
