Broszat, introduction to Höss, Kommandant in Auschwitz. During cross-examination by Counsel for the Defence Dr Kauffmann, Hoss assured the Nuremberg Tribunal:
'These so-called ill-treatments and tortures in the concentration camps . . . were not, as supposed, method, but excesses of individual leaders, deputy leaders and men who laid violent hands on the prisoners' (see IMT, XI).
