This is probably Defoe's most interesting novel after Robinson Crusoe. It relates the fortunes of a pauper-girl who is brought up in a rich household, and who becomes the mistress of the elder son of the family and the wife of the younger. She is married many times (once to her own brother), and lives in riches and poverty in London, colonial Virginia, Bath and the north country. She becomes a thief and ends up in Newgate, and finally is transported with one of her husbands, who is also a thief, back to America. She ends up in happiness and prosperity, for she is nothing if not a good business-woman.
