Public Murder Of A School Boy Declared Unsolved
'Jai case unsolved' The Sunday-Mail 8/8/2010

POLICE are unlikely to charge anyone after an exhaustive investigation into the death of 15-year-old Jai Morcom at Mullumbimby High School in northern New South Wales. Almost 12 months after the teenager died — following a playground fight over which students had the right to sit at various lunch tables — police have completed a "substantial brief" for the Coroner.

More than 100 witnesses have been interviewed, including key school staff, students, ambulance officers at the scene and medical experts.

The Sunday Mail understands that the evidence before police does not provide a prima-facie case on which any person could be charged at this stage.

Tweed Heads Detective Sergeant Terry Frost said the Coroner would ultimately decide the fate of the case at an inquest set down for January 31 at Lismore.

He said police were continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward anonymously by emailing them at tweeddets@police.nsw.gov.au.
