My list differs, however, in a number of respects, of which two are import rank: First, Professor Flugel did not take into consideration the third possibility of failure to form a super-ego, and (perhaps in consequence of this) entered atheism as the characteristic attitude of the mother-identifier: this can hardly be reconciled with the existence of mother-religions. Secondly, he did not observe the difference in attitudes to incest and homosexuality, which is of some diagnostic importance.
