This system of classification has no relation with the various theories proposed in the last Century by Maine, Bachofen, Morgan and others, which concerned the relationship between matriarchies and patriarchies, and which are now in disrepute. A discussion of the differences between these sociological theories and the present more limited psychological theory, together with some suggestions as to why they broke down, will be found in an Appendix, since it may be of interest to specialists.
