This destruction of the Bructeri may have occurred in A.D. 98. Perhaps as a sequel to it a Roman general, Vestricius Spurinna, placed a king of the Bructeri on his throne. The Bructeri were certainly not so completely destroyed as Tacitus here says.
The Roman army of Lower Germany was apparently looking on at the battle. This gives point to Tacitus's phrase about the delight of Roman eyes. It was like a great gladiatorial show.
