Professor Richard D. Altick has drawn my attention to the fact that the figures I originally quoted from Lord Jeffrey, viz. 300,000 and 30,000, were in fact the figures given by him when he revised his review for republication in a collected edition in 1844. The alteration almost certainly indicates that the reading public had grown considerably in the interval.
