The refusal of Potidaea, a tributary of Athens in the peninsula of Chalcidice, to sever its connexion with Corinth, its mother-city, was one of the immediate causes of the Peloponnesian War. The siege of the city by the Athenians lasted over two years (432-430 B.C.) and ended in its capitulation.
