George Puttenham published in 1589 his 'Art of English Poesie.' This was divided into three books,'the first of Poets and Poesye, the second of Proportion, and the third of Ornamente.' It is a systematic treatise on the origin and nature of poetry; and contains a curious account of the fashion, then coming in from Italy, of writing short poems in various shapes, such as the lozenge, the triangle, the oval, etc.
