Note by A Milnes to As A Playwright a chapter of The Life Of Dryden

This critique, if it can be dignified with such a name, was really written by John Crowne, with the help of Dryden and Shadwell. Crowne had in 1671 written 'Juliana,' and was author of seventeen plays in all.

'In my notes on a play called the "Empress of Morocco" (I call 'em mine because above three parts of four were written by me) I gave vent to more ill-nature in me than I will do again.'—Crowne, Epistle before Caligula, a Tragedy, 1698.
