Who became Sir John Davies after the reign of Elizabeth, author of 'Nosce Teipsum,' a poem in stanzas of elegiac verse. This poem had a considerable influence on English verse, and Davies hardly deserves the covert sneer of Johnson. Cf. Note p.8 line 5.
