Horace's words are cinctutis ... Cethegis, 'the girdled Cethegi'. He is referring to the time, some 200 years earlier, when such men as M. Cornelius Cethegus (censor B.C. 209, consul 204) wore a kind of girdle or loin-cloth (cinctus) under the toga instead of the tunic of later, more effeminate times.
