This is a prosy word, used too often. It may be difficult to avoid in cumulative argument ("Moreover . . . in addition . . . too . . . also . . . again . . . furthermore ") but sometimes it, like all its synonyms, may be more padding. Even when it is not, one of the simpler words should be preferred, if they have not been used up.
