At this date the print-shops, and especially Mathew Darly's in the Strand, were filled with engravings, generally satirizing well-known individuals and having titles of this kind, e.g. The Lilly Macaroni (Lord Ancrum), the Southwark Macaroni (Mr. Thrale),The Martial Macaroni (Goldsmith's friend, Ensign Horneck), and so forth.
