It has been suggested by F. T. Bowers (Elizabethan Revenge Tragedy, 1940) that we are intended to lose sympathy with Hieronymo when, ignoring the command 'Vengeance is mine', he turns to plots himself and undertakes his murderous play. But the final speech of the Ghost makes it quite clear that to Kyd the characters remained to the end divided into sheep and goats. 'Good Hieronymo slain by himself' is to be conducted with the innocent Isabella and his accomplice Bel-Imperia to the Elysian fields, while the rest of the cast are to be hauled off to Tartarean regions by Revenge.
