The scholastic theologians distinguished between three categories of worship, applicable respectively to God, Mary and me other saints. Some at least, says Lijster, held that the images should themselves be venerated with me category of worship applicable to the subject signified, although the veneration of images apart from the subjects they signified was neither intended nor discussed. The iconographical details are those conventionally applicable to images of Christ.
