The subsistence of the accidents of bread when the substance of the Eucharistic species had been changed was a serious difficulty caused by the application of Aristotelian categories to a phenomenon they were never intended to explain. Erasmus uses the classical 'domicile' ironically. The ordinary correlative of 'accident' in this sense is 'substance'. The moment of divine generation and the number of filiations in Christ had been discussed in the context of the Arian debates and the Filioque dispute which split eastern and western Christians, but were not important issues in the late middle ages. Erasmus mentions these issues with similar distaste in the preface to his 1523 edition of St Hilary.
