The Life and Works of John Dryden (1631-1700)
by Bonamy Dobrée (1956)

JOHN DRYDEN, poet, dramatist, critic, is by general consent one of the supreme literary figures of the seventeenth century. 'Glorious John' became as great among his contemporaries as Samuel Johnson did a century later, and it was Johnson himself who said of Dryden 'perhaps no nation ever produced a writer that enriched his language with such a variety of models'.

Professor Dobrée has long made Dryden a special study. He has distilled into his essay the quintessence of his learning, and, helped by his skill in quotation, he has made his subject vital and fascinating.
