Pythagoras was traditionally supposed to have invented music upon hearing a blacksmith strike his anvil with hammers of different weights. A similar legend grew up about the figure of Jubal, who supposedly performed the feat at the forge of his brother Tubal-cain (Genesis 4:20-22).
