On 21 April 1894, the first performance of Shaw's Arms and the Man took place at the Avenue Theatre, and the play ran till 7 July.

'It passed for a success,' Shaw reported, 'the applause on the first night being as promising as could be wished . . . To witness it the public paid £1777-5s-6d., an average of £23-2s-5d per representation . . .'
