OF the many remarkable women I [ Mrs Lowndes] have known, Rhoda Brougton stands out as having been the most remarkable.... She had a fine mind, an acute type of intellect, and a most generous nature. Under a somewhat tart manner she had a sensitive heart, and possessed an exceptionally loyal nature. Such a person is naturally both a good lover and a good hater. The story went, and I feel sure it was true, that when she was a young woman, and a friend of hers was jilted by a man owing to efforts made by his mother, he received from Rhoda Broughton a mug on which was inscribed, 'For a Good Boy'.
