The following concepts were once clearly understood but are now uncertain:
Responsibility: The foundation of duty, justice and sanity, the notion that you, and you alone, are responsible for your actions has been discarded.
Child Rearing: The traditional notion of raising children to become dutiful citizens has been replaced by child-worship; the maxim 'spare the rod and spoil the child', has changed from a warning to a command. (With disastrous results.) Other traditional maxims including 'children should be seen and not heard' and 'children should not speak until spoken to' [by adults] have been discarded.
The Law: The function of law has changed from the respected upholder of justice to the enforcer of tyranny. With the very range and detail of the explosion of statutes making it very unlikely that any citizen can be sure of all the rules governing the community, or believe that they should comply with them all.
Crime: What constitutes crime and how it should be punished is now unclear— see Legal Precedent Overturned
Sexual Roles: Neither men nor women recognise an undisputed communal role, the notions of 'Gentleman' and 'Lady' have been abandoned.
Authority: Is no longer unchallenged but has become so uncertain that Parent/Child — Teacher/Pupil — Employer/Employee relationships are now chaotic and fraught with the risk of prosecution or persecution.
Duties Of A Citizen: Have become uncertain, with the notion of unquestioning obedience to a monarch or head of state abandoned.
Duties Of A Spouse, Father, Mother, Son, Daughter: Are now uncertain and are often set by convenience.
Manners: The unwritten protocols governing our behaviour have been discarded, there is no longer even any clear resolution of rights to passage. The previous maxims of 'age before beauty', and 'Ladies before Gentlemen' have been abandoned. The very terms 'Lady' and 'Gentleman' have become discarded.
Terms of Address: Sir, Madam, Mister, Master, Miss, Mr, Mrs, Esquire and Esq. have been discarded, replacing polite respect with the familiarity of a Christian name or nothing.
Dress And Appearance: Almost always arbitrary, there are still some places that enforce dress rules, and some occasions where social expectation forces some limitations, but these are diminishing in number and quality.
Hospitality:The traditional concern for the well-being of guests confirmed by offers of tea, coffee or alcoholic beverage have been replaced with tyranny such as no smoking, or only non-fat milk.
Courtship: Has been discarded leaving only the risk of prosecution or persecution.
Decency: Ignored— Pornography is common place, along with public nudity. Public dress and behaviour are no longer modest, with the courts ruling that the use of the Saxon word for copulation is not obscene.
Land Title: Since the Mabo edict no one in Australia can be sure what land title involves. And in Queensland the notion that possession of title means ownership has been contradicted by the state law that makes ownership dependent upon the Queensland department charged with controlling land title.
Property Ownership: Once obtained security and esteem but has been undermined by the law so that liability is increasing as security diminishes. Possession now means more risk of prosecution, while the rights of ownership are constantly being eroded. i.e. Just what you can do with your land, house, garden, car, gun, pets etc., are constantly being limited by increasing statutes.
