Viscount Bolingbroke (Henry St. John) (1678-1751) was Tory prime minister of Queen Anne and the friend of Swift and Pope (to whom he suggested the 'Essay on Man'). He wrote "Letters" bearing on politics and literature, and his chief fame is that of a rhetorician. His Ideal of a Patriot King shows him at his best.
