Theban and Thracian orgies
Note from The Achievement of France
in Part One of Reflections On The Revolution In France

Thebes, the principal city of Boeotia, was associated in Greek legend with Dionysiac orgies, which were commonly believed to have been imported from Thrace. The orgiastic rites of Cotys were also introduced to Athens from Thrace. See the articles Pentheus, Dionysus, Cotys in 'Everyman's Smaller Classical Dictionary',
